Stoney Brooks and his Cottonmouth Combo
Stoney Brooks and his Cottonmouth Combo feature Landon Twilley on guitar, Matt Waucope (of The Mar-Tans) on Keys, Alex Gasser on Upright Bass and Pete Maier on Drums. We were caught off-guard and totally stunned at just how good this band was. We know each member and how good they are-but collectively they are really, really good. Like play in any blues club on earth and hold their own, good.
Stoney Brooks is a priceless Atlanta gem. He knows how to write very good music, he definitely knows how to perform on a stage and captivate a crowd. He looks the part, he sounds the part and he is as personable as a person can possibly be. Stoney Brooks is also a true music advocate, and has no trouble what so ever sharing his love, admiration and appreciation for other artists and bands to his crowds. Case in point, Frankie from Frankie’s Blues Mission stopped in to see Stoney Brooks and his Cottonmouth Combo and when Stoney saw him, he announced to the crowd that Atlanta’s best blues artist was in the house and that they should show him some love. He then proceeded to ask Frankie in between sets to join him on stage for a couple songs. Thankfully, Frankie said yes, Landon handed Frankie his guitar-and the crowd had a special unplanned treat that night!
Speaking of Landon Twilley-Holy cow this guy just gets better and better and better and better every time you see him! I’m beginning to wonder what planet he’s from? My goodness, he can play some mean and nasty blues guitar, rock guitar, soul and funk guitar and who knows what else? The guy is very very good. And, he is as sweet as pie to know and talk to! A real gentleman and another credit to the Atlanta live music scene for sure. Each member of Stoney Brooks Cottonmouth Combo is, to be honest. It’s like a world-class band was put together to play blues clubs!
I don’t even have words to describe just how good they were. All I can say is go see them as soon as possible. No matter which music style you prefer, these guys will steal your heart and make your feet dance and stomp all night long for sure. They are incredibly good, and they never have a bad second of music the entire night. True masters of their craft, each of them-and when you put them together they are just magical!
Here is the plain truth about Stoney Brooks
He deserves a crowd of 500 trying their best to get in to any and every venue he performs at. He is a GEM, a real credit to the Atlanta live music scene. Please trust me, go to a Stoney Brooks (in any form) show within the next 30 days. You can thank me later.
A very special thank you to Blind Willie’s Blues Club for having bands like Stoney Brooks and his Cottonmouth Combo perform there. In a city like Atlanta and a state like Georgia, with the very best of the best live music in the world all over the city and state playing all the time-I am confident in saying that Blind Willie’s had a lock on the best live entertainment on that night. They honestly were that good! That band on that night was easily worth a hundred dollars per ticket, and people got in the door for a few bucks. It was the steal of the century.
