Mother’s Finest-Georgia’s beloved funk rock soul band that still has that special groove that they had in back in 1970! The current lineup consists of Joyce Kennedy, Glenn “Doc” Murdock, Moses Mo, Jerry “Wyzard” Seay, Dion Murdock and John Hayes, and my goodness do they put on an incredible show.
Mother’s Finest has been putting on incredible live performances since 1970. That’s 55 years of ass-kicking concerts (1972 was their first album-but they were playing shows before the album was recorded and released), and they are still to this day entrancingly good. They flat out ROCK! They engage the crowd, they hype the crowd and they most certainly rock a crowd unlike most other bands on earth. Read that again. They are TIGHT too! Dion and Wyzard hold it all down while Joyce woos the crowd like Pepé Le Pew, Mo soars like an eagle and Doc, John and the background singers weave all through the music. It’s like watching poetry in motion.
So, last night we covered their show at Eddie’s Attic in Decatur, Georgia. Eddie’s Attic is an actual listening room (a live music venue where people listen to the music and don’t get belligerently drunk and scream over the music and cause a scene, disrespecting the artist/s performing on the stage. People sit and soak up and enjoy the music being played just for them). Thankfully, Eddie’s Attic had really, really good sound because Mother’s Finest deserved no less.
So, let’s get to the show! Mother’s Finest, led by Dion Murdock, weave their way through the crowd up to and onto the stage. They immediately start engaging the crowd while they pick up their instruments and sticks and get right to it. From the very first note, you just knew you were in for one of those very special nights of live music. I had a feeling it was going to be a great night when I was in the green room talking with Moses Mo before the show, and he had this look in his eye as he said to me, “I can’t wait to start playing.” It was like he was a bull waiting for the gate to open so he could burst out and run wild and free. But even after that, I had no idea their show would be that good.
(Their Set List will be inserted here later today/this weekend)
I’ve known Mother’s Finest for 20 years, and Dirty South TV streamed them live on the internet around 19 years ago. We’ve covered their shows, we’ve been to their rehearsals. Some of them I used to regularly talk to on the phone. I. Know. Them. I had no idea they were the criminally most underrated band to ever come out of Georgia. Their 2011 induction into The Georgia Music Hall of Fame is no where near good enough. A key to the city of Atlanta would not be good enough. Mother’s Finest should have roads and streets named after them. They are a musical precious gem that is loved and adored all over the world, and Atlanta as a city and Georgia as a state should visibly cherish and spotlight them.
Georgia, especially Atlanta, is truly blessed when it comes to music. The list of artists and bands that have come out of, or have been based in or even retired in Georgia is a who’s who list of great bands and artists, and one of the best concerts you will ever go to, is most certainly Mother’s Finest (They will be at The Buckhead Theatre TONIGHT Saturday June 14th, 2025-Do what you can to score some tickets). Full Stop.
Wow, hell2thayeah on all of this! Mother’s Finest’s badassery should long ago been recognized and celebrated in The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Stars on the streets from Atlanta to LA!!! They Are The Truth That Will Set U Free!!!
